Pediatric Nutrition Surveillance System (PedNSS)

PedNSS describes the nutritional status of low-income U.S. children who participate in federally-funded maternal and child health and nutrition programs such as WIC and Title V Maternal and Child Health Program.

PedNSS provides data on the prevalence and trends of nutrition-related indicators. The data collected includes pediatric socio-demographics and birth weight characteristics, gestational age, pediatric anemia, weight gain and indicators of nutritional status such as short stature, underweight, overweight, obesity, and infant feeding characteristics. Information gathered from PedNSS is used to set priorities, plan, implement, and monitor and evaluate specific public health programs.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) collaborates with participating states, tribal organizations and territories that contribute data in this surveillance program to generate an annual PedNSS report for each contributor and the nation.
