Talk to your recovery clients about problem gambling

If you are a social worker, therapist, recovery specialist, or provide counsel for people dealing with alcohol or substance misuse problems, you are in a great position to support clients who are at risk for problem gambling. How can you help?

• Become familiar with the problem gambling-related resources, including recovery and voluntary self-exclusion programs.
• Encourage your clients recognize their higher risk for problem gambling.
• Explain that a gambling problem can set them back in their alcohol and substance misuse recovery.
• Point them toward effective ways to deal with new gambling opportunities in their community.
