Re: School Closure - Teach Out Options Updated

As stated in Bulletin #2, if you were unable to complete your course of study due to the school's closure, and if you were unable to have your debt cancelled using one of the remedies provided in Bulletin #1, then you may be eligible to participate in a teach out at one of the Department-approved institutions listed below and any subsequent institutions approved by the Department. If you answer "yes" to each of the statements below, please contact one of the institutions below to discuss your options:

  • I was unable to complete my course of study at JWI due to the school's closure.
  • I was unable to have my debt cancelled using one of the remedies provided in Bulletin #1.
  • I am choosing to participate in a teach-out rather than filing a Claim for Restitution with the Department.

Students that would like to participate in a teach out, if they haven't already, must provide the Department with a copy of their enrollment contract, proof of payment, and transcript, if any.

The deadline for enrolling in a teach out is Friday, April 16, 2010.

Coursework:

Since there were several courses interrupted by the school's closure, teach out options will differ as a result of the amount of coursework you completed. The teach-out school will make every effort to assist you in completing the courses for which you contracted with JWI. Any additional courses in which you would like to enroll will be at your own expense.

Expenses:

If you paid JWI for the full cost of your program, you will not incur any additional expenses. However, if you only paid for a portion of your program, then the balance of the funds due JWI are owed to the school providing the teach-out.

Enrollment and Teach-out Contracts:

If you opt to participate in a teach out, you must sign both an enrollment contract and a teach out agreement with the institution no later than April 16, 2010 and to complete the teach out no later than 120 days after executing the agreement. Both documents have been approved by the Department and the terms of the teach out will be set forth on those documents. The Department will work with the teach out institutions to provide them with information regarding the status of your coursework and financing with the closed school.

Deadline: April 16, 2010

Any student that has not had his/her debt cancelled using one of the remedies provided in Bulletin #1, must either execute a teach out agreement or file a Claim for Restitution no later than April 16, 2010.

Questions:

For those students who completed the programs for which they contracted with JWI, the Board of Registration for Massage Therapists (Board) has advised that it will not accept any "clinical or academic training received under the auspices of JWI after June 17, 2009" towards licensure. Therefore, these students should contact one of the above schools to discuss a teach-out option.

For those students who completed a teach-out with the Massage Institute of Cape Cod, the Board has not yet determined whether it will approve those students for licensure. Once the Board has made its determination, if students need additional hours, the Department will work with students at that time.

If students have any questions about the Board's determination, please contact Ann Constable, Executive Director of the Board of Registration for Massage Therapists at 617-727-3033.

Seeking Classmates:

While the Department is in possession of some limited student records, we are still trying to compile a list of all students who were affected by the school's closure. Any assistance you can provide in helping us to locate your classmates will be greatly appreciated.

Future Updates:

All future bulletins will be posted on the Department's website.

The Department greatly appreciates your help in keeping the volume of phone calls it receives to a minimum by checking these Bulletins. If you have specific questions about the teach-out or claim options, please contact us.

For those filing Claims, please be advised that it is not unusual for the claims process to take a year or more, and if the school files for bankruptcy, it could take significantly longer.

Information on our website will be updated when, and only when, there is new information available. If there is no new information for a period of time, this simply means that that stage of the claims process is not yet complete.

We thank you for your help and patience in this matter.
