Wetlands and Water Resources - MassDOT Environmental Services

Ensuring all scheduled construction projects receive applicable Federal and State wetland permits before advertising for bids

We work in accordance with Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (ACOE) methodologies to:

  • Prepare and/or review wetland permits and wetland/stormwater mitigation designs
  • Delineate wetland boundaries in the field
  • Conduct habitat evaluations, and
  • Determine wetland functions and values

We review proposed projects and provide advice on wetland and water quality issues. We also recommend design changes where necessary and possible. This to avoid and lessen impacts, and determine the proper mitigation. We base our recommendations on extent of impact relative to mitigation feasibility.

To meet project goals and increase efficiency, we conduct early environmental coordination meetings. These are held with the ACOE, U.S. Coast Guard, Massachusetts DEP, and local Conservation Commissions. Together, we review and discuss projects, policies and procedures related to wetland and water quality protection. Our staff also ensures all projects are in compliance with the Massachusetts Endangered Species Act (MESA).

We also conduct research designed to study the effects of transportation projects on the environment. Through the use of Best Management Practices and context sensitive designs, we're trying to lessen these effects. Our efforts improve existing conditions of water quality, wildlife habitat, and landscape connectivity.
