Re: School Closure

On April 4, 2003 the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education suspended the license of the above-referenced school for failure to comply with the laws and regulations governing private business schools. Although Xintra was ordered to immediately cease all operations, it appears that it continued to operate.

On August 13, 2003 the Department scheduled an on-site visit at the Quincy location and upon arrival found the school closed. Subsequently we received calls from students who had been told that the Quincy location was closed due to electrical problems.

On August 21, 2003 the Division once again visited the Quincy location and found the school closed. The Division posted a notice on the door of the school directing students to the Division's web-site for more information.

It appears that the owners of the Quincy and Malden locations of Xintra Institute of Technology have filed or will file for bankruptcy.

On August 27, 2003 the Division notified Xintra that the Division intends to revoke its license to operate. In accordance with the regulations, Xintra has fifteen days to request a hearing. If Xintra does not request a hearing, their license to operate a private occupational school will be revoked.

Students who have not completed their course of study due to Xintra's closure may file a claim with the Division for a tuition refund. Please consult the Division's web-site for future bulletins on this matter. In the meantime, students can contact the Office of Consumer Affairs at the Attorney General's Office and file a Consumer Complaint:
http://www.ago.state.ma.us/con_pro/index.asp?head1=Consumer%20Protection&section=17.
Any students who have paid tuition to Xintra as of their suspension date, April 4, 2003, may contact the agencies with whom they have student loans (contact information should be on your loan documents) to request a discharge and or may contact their banks to stop payment on any payments by credit cards or checks.

Teachers who have not been paid wages should contact the Attorney General's Office to file a claim for unpaid wages.

The Division will post updates as new information becomes available.
