What you need
Family members of a deceased veteran may be eligible for a veterans’ bonus on behalf of a deceased veteran military service.
If the deceased veteran lived in Massachusetts before entering the military and served during a wartime period and was not previously awarded a bonus for that their wartime service.
All applicants will need:
- Create a Veterans’ Bonus Portal account using your information
- (Register as family member of deceased veteran)
- The Veteran's DD214 or DD1300, if available
- The Veteran's Death Certificate if available
Payments are paid to the heirs-at-law, below is the order of precedence for payment(s).
Note: If there is more than one heir-at-law; payments can be made in portions as the State Treasurer determined using the same below order of precedence for payments.

- Mother or father
- Brother or sister
- Other dependents
How to apply
- Apply online.
- Create Veterans Bonus portal account
- (Register as family member of deceased veteran)
- Update your demographics (your contact information)
- Update deceased veteran’s information
- Update deceased veteran’s service history
- Upload supporting documentation
- DD214, Death Certificate, etc
- Apply for bonus (top menu)
- Apply for eligible bonuses
- Contact the Veterans’ Bonus Division though your portal account, if you have questions or need assistance completing the application
Next steps

Approval/Denial
You will receive an email when the application is approved or denied. Additionally, you can view the status on your portal page at any time.
Receive bonus
Payments take approximately 4-6 weeks to process and deliver via mailed check. Unfortunately, we do not have direct deposit services available.
Appeal a denial
If a bonus is denied, you will receive an email or letter regarding your denied bonus detailing the reason(s) the bonus was denied along with appeal instructions if you disagree with the decision.
You are able to appeal the Division’s decision. You must send a written request for an appeal within 60 days from the date of receiving the denial..
