To get a vehicle inspector license, you need to:
Submit an inspector training application to the Vehicle Check Program
Complete an inspector training course which includes
classroom attendance and participation
a written exam
a hands-on practical demonstration
Submit an inspector license application to the RMV
Submit all applicable fees.

Your license must be renewed every year, and you must attend a re-certification training every 2 years.
Non-commercial and commercial training includes emissions and safety components, while 7D and motorcycle training includes the safety component only. The commercial training also includes additional material that meets the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration requirements for commercial motor vehicle inspectors.
