Veterans that lived in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts before entering the military may be eligible to receive a bonus for their service in the Vietnam Conflict, Korean War, and World War II. See below for details.

FOR LIVING SERVICE VETERANS:

This is a one-time bonus which most received at discharge.  If you are not sure if you received it contact the Veterans’ Bonus Division prior to applying. Contact the Veterans’ Bonus Division if you need to confirm whether you have applied in the past. 

FOR DECEASED VETERANS:

The relatives of a deceased veteran may apply to receive the bonus the veteran would have received. Click here to go to the special process for deceased veterans.

To apply for the bonuses, your active service must fall between the designated eligibility dates for each bonus:

  • Vietnam Conflict (July 1, 1958 to May 17, 1975)
  • Korean War (June 25, 1950 to January 31, 1955)
  • World War II (September 16, 1940 to July 25, 1947)

You will need the following documents to apply:

  1. Completed application form - see the "How to apply" section below. 
  2. DD214 (Discharge papers)
  3. Residency documentation showing you lived in Massachusetts before entering the military if available (high school diploma/yearbook, tax form, mortgage, etc.)
    • If you do not have residency documentation our office can research on your behalf

In addition:

  • Your discharge must be under honorable conditions

Please note: Active service shall not include active duty for training in the Army National Guard, Air National Guard, or reserves.

If you are a family member applying online on behalf of a deceased veteran, complete the deceased veteran bonus application.

To submit your application online as a living veteran, complete our application form.

If you intend to submit your supporting attachments online, we recommend you gather your pertinent documentation before starting your application. We accept the following file formats:

  • PDF
  • DOC/DOCX
  • XLS/XSLX
  • JPG/JPEG, GIF, PNG, and TIF
  • ZIP 

Your application will not be considered complete until your supporting documents have been received. Before you submit your finalized application, you can either upload your documents online (preferred), or mail them to our office at the following address:

    • Form DD214 (Discharge papers)
    • Certificate of Residency
    • Residency documentation showing you lived in Massachusetts before entering the military if available (high school diploma/yearbook, tax form, mortgage, etc.)
      • If you do not have residency documentation our office can research on your behalf

    Your application packet will include the Application Form, Residency Documentation if available, and a copy of your DD214.

    1. Receive bonus

      Payments take approximately 4-6 weeks to process and deliver, via mailed check. Unfortunately, we do not have direct deposit services available.

    2. Appeal a denial

      You will receive a letter regarding your denied bonus detailing the reason(s) the application was not accepted.

      You are able to appeal the Division’s decision. You must send a written request for an appeal within 60 days from the date of receiving the denial.
