Basic Hunter Education - Blended Format

Students complete the online MA Hunter Study Guide before attending one in-person Field Day.
This format does require as much time and effort as a traditional course and students will need to allot 6-8 hours of their time to complete the online MA Hunter Study Guide.

What you need   for Basic Hunter Education - Blended Format

In this Blended learning format, students read and learn the course material ahead of time on their own to prepare for in class activities with the instructor and peers. This format requires students to complete the online MA Hunter Study Guide (50% of the course) before attending one in-person class known as the Field Day (50% of the course) for hands-on practice and to take the final exam.

This blended format is a good option for students with tight schedules and who are self-motivated, conscientious, and learn well on their own.

Students 17 years of age or younger must have parental consent to attend our courses (download the minor permission form). Parents and Guardians are invited and encouraged to stay during the class session. Please note that this format may be difficult for students less than 16 years of age unless they receive guidance while completing the homework assignment.

  1. How to complete the Online Study Guide

    Completing the Online MA Hunter Study Guide earns you credit towards your Massachusetts Basic Hunter Education Certificate and provides the necessary information for you to successfully pass the final exam.

    For best performance use a computer/laptop and either Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox as your web browser.

    1. Go to https://www.huntercourse.com/usa/massachusetts/
    2. Create a free account (each student will need their own email address to create an account).
    3. The Massachusetts Hunter Study Guide is comprised of 16 sections (12 chapters and 4 virtual field day hunt situations) each with a quiz. You must receive a score of 80% or better to proceed to the next section. You can retake each quiz as many times as necessary.
      1. If you have difficulties moving past the Chapter 1 quiz, use the Course Outline button to navigate through the rest of the study guide.
    4. Once all 16 quizzes are successfully completed (80% or better), you will end on a final “Congratulations” page.
    5. Save the final "Congratulations" page (as a .PDF, .JPEG, .JPG, or .GIF).

    Using a computer/laptop and either Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox as your browser -

    1. Sign in to your Online MA Hunter Study Guide account.
    2. Navigate to the final “Congratulations” page.
    3. Hover over the page and right-click your mouse. Choose “print” from the drop-down menu.
    4. A new window will open with options. Select the option to “Save as a PDF”. Then click “save”.
    5. A window will appear, prompting you to save a file named HUNTERcourse.com.pdf and to specify a location.
    6. Edit the file to include your full legal name (i.e., JamesJSmithHUNTERcourse.com.pdf). Then click “save”.

    NOTE: If you are unable to save your Congratulations Page as a PDF, you may alternatively save your Congratulations Page as an image file (JPEG, JPG, GIF, PNG). A screenshot is acceptable.

  3. Register for a field day

    Use this online form to provide your registration information, attach proof of completing the online MA Hunter study guide, and select a field day to finish the course.

  4. Participate in the Field Day and Pass the Final Exam

    Arrive 15 minutes early for orientation and to verify your registration information. Bring lunch, water, and be prepared for outdoor activities. Do NOT bring any firearms or ammunition.

    You will join in several hands-on activities guided by the instructor to deepen your understanding of the material.  

    Lastly, you must pass a final exam with a score of 80% or better. There is no time limit for taking the exam. 

  5. Purchase your Massachusetts hunting license

    Upon successful completion of Basic Hunter Education*, you may purchase your hunting or sporting license online at MassFishHunt or in-person at any MassWildlife District office or license agent.

    *Proof is not required. Your Basic Hunter Education certificate will be mailed to you within 2 weeks of the course ending.

Tips for Success

Make it a joint effort - Get help and discuss the lessons. It’s OK to do the coursework with family and friends if you understand every lesson and can pass the quizzes and answer the chapter questions on your own. 

Do not wait until the last minute - Plan your time now. The online assignment takes at least 6 hours to complete.
