What you need to know

All municipal entities located in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts are eligible.

The offer includes prepaid collection containers for intact and damaged batteries. This distribution was created in response to rising concern over the hazards associated with the improper collection and disposal of lithium-ion batteries with solid waste.

MassDEP through vendor, NLR, Inc., will distribute materials and training to Massachusetts municipalities that are interested in collecting mixed batteries, including lithium-ion batteries. All the collection materials and training are provided at no cost.

How to apply

Applications are due August 31, 2026. Only one application can be submitted by the municipality’s Recycling Coordinator. The grant application and additional guidance can be found on the MassDEP Lithium-Ion Battery Collection Distribution Agreement.

  1. Evaluation Criteria

    MassDEP will review each application for eligibility and completeness and will notify applicants of the outcome of the review.

  2. Grant Terms and Conditions

    Grantees agree to the terms and condition listed in the grant application including participation in training regarding the proper collection and storage of lithium-ion batteries.
