IMPORTANT: You must have an account in the HIC portal to renew online. If you have previously created an account and are looking to renew your registration, log-in to your account here

NOTE: Renewal applications received more than 30 days beyond the expiration of the HIC Registration will require you to:

  • Obtain a new HIC Registration card
  • Pay associated registration and Guaranty Fund fees

If you have never registered with HIC before, create an online account for your new registration.

The Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation does not accept payment over the phone. If you are registering or renewing a registration online using our registration portal, you may pay by credit card. Otherwise, we only accept payment by certified bank check or money order. Any other form of payment, including cash, or personal or business checks, is not accepted.

How to renew   Renew Registration: Home Improvement Contractor

If you have an expired or current HIC registration and do not have an online account, visit the online portal to create one. Then you will be able to renew or reactivate your HIC number online. 

To renew your application by mail, send the completed renewal form and certified check or money order, payable to Commonwealth of Massachusetts, to:

If you are renewing by mail, only certified checks or money orders can be accepted. Any other form of payment, including cash, or personal or business checks, will be returned as ineligible. 

Complete a renewal application and bring it in-person with a certified check or money order. 
In-person service is Tuesdays only! January 7–March 25, HIC in-person registration service will be on Tuesdays, by appointment only. To make an appointment, or for registration help, call 617-973-8787, Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

IMPORTANT: If you are renewing in person, only payment by certified check or money order is accepted. Any other form of payment, including cash, credit/debit card, or personal or business checks, will not be accepted.

If you have previously held a Registration, it must be renewed every 2 years.

If you are filing as a Doing Business As (DBA), you must provide a current copy of the business certificate filed with the city or town clerk.
