What you need

You may call the Commission to request free, confidential advice from the Attorney of the Day. The attorney will call you back within 1 to 2 business days.

You may send the Commission a request for written advice. You will receive a written response within 30 days.

Please note that telephone advice provided by the Legal Division is binding and carries the same weight as written advice.

Please note that we cannot provide:

  1. Any advice about conduct that has already occurred;
  2. Any advice about someone else's conduct, unless you have permission from that person to get advice on their behalf; or
  3. Any original materials submitted in support of requests for legal advice.

How to request

Instructions

  1. Click Request advice to open the intake page
  2. Click the radio button next to Request legal advice 
  1. Click Next
  2. Enter your First Name, Last Name, Street Address, City, State, Zip Code, Phone Number, and Email Address
  3. Enter your Title/Position and Agency/Entity, and indicate whether it is a state, county, or municipal agency
    1. If your position is municipal, indicate whether it has been designated as a Special Municipal position, if known
  4. Indicate whether you were elected or appointed to this position
  5. Write a full description of your situation, including why you are requesting advice
  6. Select whether you prefer to receive advice by phone or in writing (usually by e-mail)
  7. Indicate whether we may leave you a voicemail stating that we are calling from the State Ethics Commission
  8. Provide the best time for us to reach you
  9. Review all information to make sure it is complete and accurate
  10. Click Submit
  11. You will receive a confirmation message once your request has been submitted

Call the State Ethics Commission at (617) 371-9500 and ask to speak to the Attorney of the Day.  

The attorney will call you back within 1 to 2 business days.
