What to Know
You need to certify to MassDEP that you are complying with all applicable environmental requirements:
- Within 60 days of installing an Emergency generator, fire pump or other similar engine rated at 37 kilowatts or more, or
- At least 30 days before installing a Non-Emergency engine rated at 50 kilowatts or more.
Workbooks, instructions, and forms are provided on this web page. Please note that there are differences in the requirements for Emergency and Non-Emergency engines and turbines, so be sure to select the documents that apply to your installation.
Notes:
- Most Emergency units qualify for the compliance certification option.
- Many Non-Emergency units do not, but may still be installed. Please consult with MassDEP before proceeding. You may need to submit a comprehensive plan application (CPA) instead.
- There is a streamlined CPA option for combined heat and power (CHP) facilities that generate both power and usable heat from a single engine.
See Air Plan Approval Applications to learn more.
