To become a home care aide, you need to complete training to make sure you have the knowledge to provide safe and professional care. There are a couple of ways that you can get this training.

What you need for Take the first step to prepare for a career in the health care industry

  • The online training, Personal and Home Care Aide State Training (PHCAST) is a self-paced course. To participate in the PHCAST online training, you will need:

  • access to a computer, tablet or smartphone with high-speed internet access
  • a valid email address
  • a desire to learn

Fees for Take the first step to prepare for a career in the health care industry

There is no cost to participate in the PHCAST online training. It is entirely free!

How to enroll Take the first step to prepare for a career in the health care industry

How to Enroll

Please note there are different tracks depending on why you are taking the course.  Scroll down to find the correct section for you – New to the Field, Refresher or Caregiver.

If you are new to the field, please follow these steps to self-enroll in the PHCAST online training.   

Step 1:  Go to https://elderaffairs.instructure.com/register

Step 2:  Choose “I’M A STUDENT”

Step 3:

  • Enter Join Code  LTYBGP (upper-case letters only)
  • Enter your first and last name
  • Enter your email
  • Choose a password and confirm your password
  • Finally, click on the button “Start Learning

 

If you work in home care and are interested in taking some of the modules as a refresher follow the steps below. As a refresher you are not required to complete all the modules and assessments but if you do you will earn the certificate.

Step 1:  Go to https://elderaffairs.instructure.com/register

Step 2:  Choose “I’M A STUDENT” 

Step 3:

  • Enter Join Code  F9BLRB (upper-case letters only)
  • Enter your first and last name
  • Enter your email
  • Choose a password and confirm your password
  • Finally, click on the button “Start Learning”

 

Want to learn more as a Caregiver

If you are a caregiver for a family member or someone else and would like to improve your skills and interactions, you are welcome to take the course.  Follow the steps below and you can take as many or as few modules as you need.  If you complete the entire course, you will be eligible for the certificate.

Step 2:  Choose “I’M A STUDENT”

Step 3:

  • Enter Join Code  EGPPGF (upper-case letters only)
  • Enter your first and last name
  • Enter your email
  • Choose a password and confirm your password
  • Finally, click on the button “Start Learning”
