Background
A series of eight bridges at the I-90/I-95 (Route 128) interchange on the Newton/Weston border are in need of replacement and rehabilitation. The bridges are currently safe but aging and deteriorating. Included in these bridges is I-90's crossing over the Charles River. Of the eight bridges, five will be replaced, one will be rehabilitated, and two will have their superstructure replaced.
The I-90/I-95 interchange provides access between Boston, the MetroWest, and points north and south around the Boston region. I-90 over the Charles moves passengers and freight to downtown Boston, Logan Airport, and Boston's seaport.
Working with the City of Newton and the Town of Weston, abutting residents, roadway users, and other stakeholders, the team will design a plan for construction that minimizes and mitigates temporary construction impacts.
Schedule and process
As of winter 2024, preliminary construction work has begun. Initial outreach to the public will take place in spring 2024. Construction is anticipated to begin in spring 2024 and last 4.5 years.
MassDOT will use staged construction to maintain existing three lanes of I-90 during construction. The project will also use accelerated bridge replacement and offline construction.
Bridge and roadway safety improvements will be made to
- I-90
- Ramps within the interchange
- Bridge span carrying I-90 over the Worcester Mainline commuter rail
MassDOT does not expect any permanent right‐of‐way impacts to private property or City/Town streets. Construction operations may cause temporary impacts to adjoining streets and intersections in Newton and Weston.
Project benefits
Once the project has been completed, the location will feature:
- Improved bridge and roadway safety
- Increased vertical clearance for freight movements
- Improved seismic resiliency
- Reduced noise impacts through the installation of noise walls along I-90 in Auburndale to the project’s eastern limit of work
