Ask the Appellate Tax Board (ATB)

Join our monthly public Q&A to ask general questions about tax appeals, deadlines, forms, hearings, the appeals process, and more.

Join our monthly Ask the ATB session to learn how the tax appeal process works, what information you may need, and where to find helpful resources. These sessions are open to tax professionals and members of the public.

How to Join

This forum will be offered virtually through Zoom once a month. You do not need to register for a session. You do not need a Zoom account to join our session.

The first session will be held Tuesday, August 18th, 2026 at 1 pm.

  • Required forms and documents
  • What happens after an appeal is filed
  • How hearings are scheduled
  • How to prepare for a hearing
  • What to expect during the hearing

What the session cannot provide

These sessions provide general information only. Agency staff cannot:

  • Give legal or tax advice
  • Tell you how to argue your specific case
  • Predict the outcome of an appeal
  • Review confidential taxpayer information in a public session
  • Discuss another person’s tax matter
  • Replace formal filing requirements or official deadlines

Because these sessions are open to the public, please do not share Social Security numbers, account numbers, tax identification numbers, addresses, financial details, or other confidential information.

How the session works

What to expect:

  • Sessions are held monthly
  • Questions may be submitted in advance or asked during the session
  • Staff will answer as many general questions as time allows
  • Similar questions may be grouped together

To submit a question in advance, please email william.doherty@mass.gov. In your email, please include the following:

  • Your Name
  • Are you an assessor, other tax professional, taxpayer, business representative, or other?
  • Question

Submitting a question does not create an appeal, extend a deadline, or guarantee an individual response.
