Salt Marsh Restoration: Ditch Remediation, Runnels, and Marsh Habitat Mounds (Trio)
The intent of this guidance document is to ensure consistency in permitting and to streamline the review process for projects involving runnels, ditch remediation, and marsh habitat mounds. The aim is to provide clear and detailed expectations to assist project proponents in planning and executing their projects in a manner that aligns with existing regulations; this facilitates a smooth and predictable review process for these projects that contribute to the restoration and enhancement of the Commonwealth's salt marshes. This guidance was developed in collaboration with many state agencies and stakeholders. MassDEP is grateful to everyone who participated in the process, their valuable input and contributions helped shape a document that supports effective and consistent salt marsh restoration efforts.
Salt Marsh Restoration: Thin Layer Placement (TLP)
The purpose of this guidance is to facilitate implementation of Thin Layer Placement projects at suitable locations. The guidance details information to be collected and used during the planning, design, permitting, construction, and post-construction processes and monitoring to demonstrate that these projects meet existing regulatory performance standards of the Wetlands Protection Act (WPA) and Water Quality Certification (WQC) requirements. This guidance also outlines recommendations for ensuring that measures of intended restoration milestones are properly established, any unanticipated adverse effects caused by the proposed project are identified and documented in a timely manner, and appropriate corrective actions are taken to address any unintended adverse effects and restore the Salt Marsh and its functions.
