Individual Course Approval

The Massachusetts Board DOES NOT grant approval of individual courses.  If you have a course that was not previously approved by a recognized entity, you would need to contact that recognized entity to seek individual course approval.   This applies to alternative means of obtaining CEUS.  Some entities MAY grant approval for writing a chapter or book, teaching a course, etc.

Online CEUS

Licensees may obtain up to 50% of their required CEUs on line or via home study.   The Board may grant exceptions to this policy if a licensee can demonstrate extenuating circumstances.  Requests must accompany documentation to support the extenuating circumstance.  Requests should be made PRIOR to the completion of the CEUS.

Exemptions from CEUS:

Although some other licensed metal health professionals offer exemptions to CEUS, there are no exemptions for this Board.  If you are not practicing, and chose to renew your license, you need to have completed the requisite CEUs.

Proration of CEUS if you are not licensed for the entire two year cycle

License issued between: CEUs required:
January 1 and June 30 of an even numbered year   22.5
July 1 and December 31 of an even numbered year 15 15
January 1 and June 30 of an odd numbered year  7.5
July 1 and December 31 of an odd numbered year  0

Extension of Time for Completing CEUS:

The Board may grant an extension of time to complete the CEUs for those who demonstrate extenuating circumstances or an undue hardship due to unforeseen circumstances. You may submit a request in writing to the Board PRIOR to renewing your license.  Please submit your request in writing with appropriate documentation (i.e. medical notes).  If you attempt to renew your license stating that you have not completed your CEUs, your license will not be renewed unless an extension has been requested and granted.  The burden of proof to demonstrate extenuating circumstances is on the licensee.

Additional information:

The Board conducts random continuing education audits. For this reason, Allied Mental Health licensees should retain their continuing education certificates for a minimum of 2 renewal cycles (4 years). Failure to demonstrate completion of the requisite continuing education will result in discipline on the license. Please be advised that discipline incurred on the license will forever be associated with the license.
