What you need to know

  • Asking a question doesn’t require a public records request. Please call us if you have a question or require assistance: 617-586-3140.
  • A public records request is a process required to obtain paper or electronic records typically already in existence.
  • Submit your request writing via email or mail. This will help assure MOVA accurately and completely responds to the request.
  • In most instances, MOVA will provide a response within ten business days from receipt of the request. Where a complete response is not possible during that timeframe, MOVA will provide at least a preliminary response.
  • MOVA may assess a reasonable fee for the production of public records if more than four hours are required to produce the responsive records.
  • There are some exemptions to the Mass. Public Records Law that protect certain information or types of records from being released to the public.

Should MOVA deny your request, you have the right of appeal to the Records Supervisor in the Office of the Secretary of State www.sec.state.ma.us/divisions/public-records/public-records-law/appealing-a-denial.htm
