- Resident Applicants
- You must have held an active insurance producer license for the specific types of insurance you plan to handle for at least three years before applying.
- You must keep your insurance producer license active to keep your reinsurance intermediary manager license.
- Non-Resident Applicants
- You must have held an insurance producer license for the types of insurance you plan to handle for at least three years before applying.
- Application Requirements
- Submit a complete and accurate application through NIPR.com along with a $200.00 non-refundable fee.
- If your application requires supporting documentation such as proof of U.S. citizenship, or documents related to "Yes" responses to background questions (including a signed explanation and any final court or administrative records), please upload the required documents to the NIPR Attachment Warehouse when you apply. If you have already applied without uploading them, please submit the documents as soon as possible and email producerupdate.mailbox@mass.gov after uploading, as the Division is not automatically notified when documents are added to the NIPR Attachment Warehouse.
Massachusetts does not allow any exemptions from licensing under this law. If you are doing reinsurance intermediary business in Massachusetts, you must be licensed.
Contract Requirements
Under Massachusetts law (Chapter 175, Section 177O):
- A reinsurance intermediary manager can only represent a reinsurer through a written contract that has been approved by the reinsurer’s board of directors.
- A copy of the contract must be filed with the Commissioner at least 30 days before any business is handled through the intermediary by sending it to producerupdate.mailbox@mass.gov.
- The contract must include all required provisions listed in the law (Section 177O, parts a–n).
Business Entity Reinsurance Intermediary Manager License
Businesses that manage reinsurance business on behalf of insurers must hold a Business Entity Reinsurance Intermediary Manager License. Before applying, the business entity must complete the Massachusetts Business Entity licensing process. Learn about Business Entity Licensing Requirements
License-Specific Requirements
- Each affiliated member acting as a Reinsurance Intermediary Manager must be individually qualified as a Reinsurance Intermediary Manager.
- Affiliated members must maintain the insurance producer licenses required for the lines of insurance they transact as Reinsurance Intermediary Managers.
- A written contract with the reinsurer must be filed with the Commissioner.
