This dashboard characterizes the workforce from a supply perspective. It identifies trends and patterns that impact access to health care professionals and services. The data helps inform health care workforce development, education, training, recruitment, and retention. It also monitors the diversity, cultural, and linguistic competence of the workforce to meet state needs.

Note: The data used in the dashboard are available for download (Excel). The data is updated every other year in odd years.
Helpful definitions
- APRN (or RN-APRN): Advanced Practice Nurse. These nurses require additional training and certification. They have the ability to practice semi-autonomously including prescribing some medications.
- Currently practicing as an RN: This is based on self-report as indicated by a ‘yes’ response to the question ‘Are you currently practicing as an RN?’.
- Hot spot analysis:The analysis identifies significant clusters of communities with high RN to population ratios (depicted in red) and low RN to population ratios (depicted in blue). Significant clusters of communities with higher RN density are located in the Boston, Metro West, and Northeast regions of the state. Clusters of communities with lower RN density are located in the Western and Central regions.
- NP: Nurse Practitioner. These are a sub-category of APRN.
