What is self-identification

Self-identification is a voluntary, confidential process in which employees share aspects of their identity with the Commonwealth. Identity information can include race, ethnicity, gender identity, preferred name, pronouns, and disability and veteran status. Self-identification data is compiled, and that aggregate data helps inform more inclusive and equitable practices and policies for all employees.

How do I self-identify?

It’s easy! Self-identify by visiting the confidential portal at mass.gov/MassHR.
To self-identify as a veteran, there will be additional documents from the Department of Defense (DD214) to verify that status. See the Veteran Self-ID Guide at mass.gov/MassHR for more details.

Why should I self-identify?

Self-identifying is good for everyone! It helps the Commonwealth understand the diversity landscape of its workforce, and meet diversity goals, which in turn can better support staff and create a more equitable and inclusive environment for all. Self-identifying is about being a part of something bigger that’s bettering our workforce as a whole in the long term.

I've worked here for years. Why do I need to self-identify now?

Even though some aspects of your identity may be visible, or known by fellow employees, self-identification needs to come directly from you to be properly recorded and represented.

Why is it important to self-identify veteran status?

Your veteran status is an important part of the self-identification process that can mean added benefits for you. These include retirement benefits, veteran’s preference for certain positions, and career perks like assistance with the military crosswalk program, event and networking opportunities, and the chance to connect with other members of the veteran community. To self-identify as a veteran, you’ll need to fill out additional documents from the Department of Defense (DD214). Please contact your Veterans Coordinator for more information or see the Veteran Self-ID Frequently Asked Questions page.

Why is it important to self-identify disability status?

Self-identifying as having a disability helps the Commonwealth create a more inclusive and accessible workplace for all. When we understand how many people with disabilities are represented, we can create plans and policies that make this state an even better place to work. To self-identify as having a disability, you only need to fill out the form in the confidential HR portal. If you’d like to receive any accommodations, you must also self disclose, which is not a confidential process — elements of your identity will need to be shared to accommodate you. If you have questions, please read the Disability Self-ID Guide found at mass.gov/MassHR or contact your ADA Coordinator for more information.

What happens with my information once I self-identify?

Self-identification information is confidential. As with other employee data, only authorized HR personnel can see it. The HR team uses your data to help shape policies, enhance benefits, expand recruitment outreach, increase hiring of diverse talent, and more, all to better serve the Commonwealth. The aggregate data gathered during self- identification is then pulled into the Diversity Dashboard, which transparently displays the makeup of the government’s total workforce.

When I self-identify my preferred name and/or pronouns, will they be updated
system-wide?

No. Self-identifying preferred name or pronouns will not update system-wide. The confidential HR portal does not issue a notification to Managers/Supervisors or auto-populate an employee’s signature block or business card. If an employee wants their manager or supervisor to use their preferred name or pronouns, they will need to communicate with their Manager/Supervisor separately. Individuals are encouraged to add their preferred pronouns into their email signature. For more information on the gender identity and preferred name module within the portal, and how to share this information outside of the portal, please visit mass.gov/GenderIdentityFAQ.

Can I change my information once it's been submitted?

Yes! If you’d like to add or update information, you can log into the confidential portal at any time.
