Toll payment options

EZDriveMA is the electronic tolling system on MA roadways, which replaces toll booths and collects toll payments through video images of your vehicle.

With EZDriveMA, there are now four different options of paying tolls, transponder issued by Massachusetts (E-ZPass MA account), Pay by Plate (Pay By Plate MA Invoice), out of state transponder (E-ZPass Out of state), or through an established Pay By Plate MA Account. Each has different benefits, payment plans, and uses. Learn more about EZDriveMA payment options below.

Payment option 1: E-ZPass MA Account

E-ZPass MA is the easiest option for Massachusetts drivers to pay their tolls. You are charged tolls through a transponder, a small electronic device that attaches to your windshield.

When you open an E-ZPass MA account, your transponder is provided free. Your E-ZPass MA transponder provides discounted tolls on MA roadways. This transponder will also be accepted in all other states that accept E-ZPass.

If you choose to open an E-ZPass MA account, you will need to make an initial payment to establish an account balance. As you travel through tolls, they deduct from your account balance. Once your balance is too low, your account will replenish using your assigned payment choice.

When you log-in to your E-ZPass account, you will be able to manage this balance automatically or manually and see past toll charges, including updating your payment information.

Payment option 2: Pay By Plate MA Invoice

Pay By Plate MA provides customers electronic toll collection through video images of vehicle license plates. Only valid on Massachusetts tolls roads. No toll discounts. Receive an invoice in the mail 7-10 business days after toll is processed.

If you travelled through MA tolls without an account, you will be mailed a Pay By Plate MA Invoice. Once the toll trip is processed, an invoice is mailed to the registered owner of the vehicle approximately 7-10 business days after the trip. If you rent a car, it is recommended that you ask the rental car company how they process tolls and fees. Get information on driving a rental vehicle on MA toll roads.

A fee of $0.60 applies for each invoice issued. If your invoice is not paid by the due date, additional fees will be assessed for each month it remains unpaid. Continued unpaid invoices may be subject to a registration and/or license non-renewal hold and referral to collections.

Payment option 3: E-ZPass Out of State

EZDriveMA accepts all E-ZPass transponders issued by out of state E-ZPass toll agencies. You can view a map of where E-ZPass is accepted nationwide.

Out of state E-ZPass accounts do not provide toll discounts on MA roadways. If you have an E-ZPass account with another state, you will be billed through your E-ZPass state agency.

If you live or drive in a state other than Massachusetts, consider opening your E-ZPass account in that state. This will allow you to take advantage of discounts they may offer.

Payment option 4: Pay By Plate MA Registered Account

Pay by Plate MA registered account allows you to pay your tolls through your vehicle's license plate number without a transponder. A Pay By Plate MA account is only valid for toll payment on Massachusetts roadways, and does not provide discounts like E-ZPass MA.

Pay By Plate MA Registered Account offers two different payment options. When opening an account, you will be selecting between a Pre-paid and Post-paid account.

Prepaid accounts allow you to pay tolls when you assign a bank, credit or debit card and make a small deposit. Toll payments are then made from your account balance. Once your balance is too low, your account will replenish using your assigned payment choice. Log in to your account to view your monthly charges.

Postpaid accounts also require a bank, credit, or debit card on your account. With a postpaid account, you will be billed for your toll usage every 30 days.

Your account will be automatically charged for your toll usage through your assigned choice at the end of your 30-day cycle.
