VL 600.3 Loss of Residence

Click on the case numbers below to access decisions that consider whether claimants, who left their employment due to foreclosure or eviction from their homes, are eligible for unemployment benefits.

0080 7836 23

0080 7836 23 (Sept. 20, 2024) – The claimant resigned from her job to move with her partner to Georgia because they wanted a larger apartment at a lower rent than what was available in Massachusetts. Leaving a job to accompany another person to a new locality disqualifies an individual from receiving unemployment benefits. The claimant has not shown good cause attributable to the employer to resign or that she was experiencing a financial hardship that rendered her moving urgent, compelling, and necessitous. She is ineligible for benefits pursuant to G.L. c. 151A, § 25(e).

BR-107914

BR-107914 (Jan. 14, 2009) — In order to prove that home foreclosure constituted an urgent, compelling, and necessitous reason to quit and move out-of-state, the claimant must show steps to confirm her belief that she could not afford alternative housing in the area.
