MassDEP Drinking Water Program, in collaboration with UMass Amherst, Water Professional Partnership (WPP) Internship Program, is designed to cultivate the next generation of water professionals. This initiative provides flexible internships at water utilities across Massachusetts, offering hands-on experience to students, recent graduates, and career changers. Recognizing the needs of 1600+ public water systems, the multidisciplinary nature of the water industry, and underserved populations, the WPP program exposes interns to diverse roles, encompassing not only traditional operator positions but also technical, laboratory, administrative, financial, and communication functions. The WPP program streamlines the process of connecting aspiring water professionals with practical experience. MassDEP Drinking Water Program and UMass conduct initial screenings and interviews to match intern skills with utility needs. Interns are then hired through UMass, with funding provided for their wages. By prioritizing flexibility and addressing logistical considerations like transportation and insurance, the program aims to build a robust and diverse workforce of water professionals who will ensure the continued quality and sustainability of our drinking water.
