Things like trouble sleeping, getting into debt, stressing about having a place to live, or feeling like you could do more for your family can all stem from financial pressure. Reach Out has resources for veterans who are experiencing money-related challenges.

Request VA Financial Hardship Assistance 

If you lost your job or if you have a sudden decrease in income or an increase in out-of-pocket family health care expenses, we can help. Read this page to find out how to request help with current VA copay bills or an exemption from future copays.

Massachusetts Programs

MASSVETS Financial Benefits 

The Executive Office of Veterans Services provides financial relief and support programs to eligible veterans, including Chapter 115 benefits and the Disabled Veteran Annuity. 

Massachusetts Paid Family and Medical Leave (including Military Paid Family and Medical Leave) 

The Department of Family and Medical Leave oversees the Commonwealth’s Paid Family and Medical Leave (PFML) program. This program provides temporary income replacement to eligible workers who are welcoming a new child into their family, are struck by a serious illness or injury, need to take care of an ill or ailing relative, and for certain military considerations.

National Non-Profits

American Consumer Credit Counseling 

ACCC assists clients with credit counseling, bankruptcy counseling, debt settlement and consolidation, debt management and housing counseling

Coast Guard Exchange 

Offers tax-free shopping at all 64 Coast Guard Exchange (CGX) stores and on shopCGX.com. CGX provides merchandise and services of necessity and convenience to Coast Guard men and women as well as authorized patrons at locations throughout the United States and abroad.

Hanscom Federal Credit Union 

In addition to banking services, HFCU assists with home loans, reducing debt and home improvement loans. 

Women Marines Association 

Promotes the history and legacy of women veterans that served in the Marine Corps and offers emergency financial assistance and scholarships to those who qualify.

Women's Institute for a Secure Retirement 

Offers financial information and resources for all women, including caregivers who provide unpaid care for family members. The Women's Institute for a Secure Retirement is a nonprofit organization helping women, educators and policymakers understand the important issues surrounding women's retirement income.

Tax Support

Boston Tax Help Coalition Volunteer Income Tax Assistance

Offers free tax preparation, supports taxpayers with disabilities, offers a financial check-up program and financial coaching.

IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance 

The IRS's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs offer free basic tax return preparation to qualified individuals.

MASSCAP Volunteer Income Tax Assistance

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers free tax help through IRS-certified volunteers to people who generally make $64,000 or less, including persons with disabilities, the elderly and limited English speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. 

United Way Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Economic inclusion and equitable access to wealth building requires financial and employment systems that include and respond to community voice and mobilize resources and public policy for interventions that effectively solve the racial wealth gap.
