Department of Family and Medical Leave (DFML)

The Department of Family and Medical Leave oversees the Commonwealth’s Paid Family and Medical Leave (PFML) program. This program provides temporary income replacement to eligible workers who are welcoming a new child into their family, are struck by a serious illness or injury, need to take care of an ill or ailing relative, and for certain military considerations.

Now Available: 2024 Workplace Poster and Employer Notices

All Massachusetts employers (including employers with private or self-insured benefits plans) are required to distribute certain information to their employees under the Paid Family and Medical Leave (PFML) law. The documents must be available in English and each language which is the primary language of 5 or more individuals in your workforce. DFML provides translations in English and 12 other languages. The employer is responsible for providing translation with regard to any language not provided by DFML.  

Important Annual Updates

Changes to the Minimum Earnings Requirement, Weekly Benefit Amount and Contribution Rates

  • PFML's minimum earnings requirement for 2024 is $6,300. A covered individual must meet this required amount during the last 4 completed calendar quarters and earned at least 30 time the benefit amount that they are eligible for. Learn more

  • The maximum weekly benefit amount that a covered individual can receive in PFML benefits will be $1,149.90 per week. Learn more

  • The 2024 contribution rate on eligible employee wages for employers with 25 or more covered individuals will be .88%. The 2024 contribution rate on eligible employee wages for employers with fewer than 25 covered individuals will be .46%. Learn more

Important Legislative Update

PFML benefits can be supplemented with paid time off (PTO)

For applications filed on or after November 1, 2023, employees receiving PFML benefits may supplement (or “top off”) their PFML benefits with any available accrued paid leave (sick time, vacation, PTO, personal time, etc.).
