The Global Warming Solutions Act (GWSA) of 2008 requires a 10%-25% reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions below the 1990 baseline emission level from all sectors of the economy in 2020 and at least an 80% GHG emissions reduction in 2050.
The Act Creating A Next-Generation Roadmap for Massachusetts Climate Policy, signed into law in 2021, updated the GWSA requirements. The newer law requires at least 50% GHG emissions reduction in 2030, at least 75% GHG emissions reduction in 2040, and at least 85% GHG emissions reduction and at least net zero GHG emissions in 2050.
