Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell has appointed Dr. Alecia McGregor to serve on the Board of the Massachusetts Health Policy Commission (HPC), the first HPC appointment of AG Campbell’s tenure.

Dr. McGregor is currently an Assistant Professor of Health Policy and Politics at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health where she focuses on the political determinants of health inequities. With her focus on the role of racism in health policy development, health system design and health care outcomes, and maternal health, Dr. McGregor’s expertise and experience reflects many priorities of AG Campbell and the Attorney General’s Office.

“Dr. Alecia McGregor’s expertise in health care consumer advocacy and health equity will bring an important perspective to the Health Policy Commission as it works to improve our health system in Massachusetts,” said AG Campbell. “I look forward to working with Dr. McGregor and the Commission as we move toward integrating health equity into all of our critical work.”

Dr. McGregor has previously served as an Assistant Professor and Lecturer at Tufts University and Princeton University, where she taught both issues of community health and public and international affairs. In 2018, McGregor began serving on the Lancet Commission on Public Policy and Health in the Trump Era, which consists of an international group of scholars assembled to diagnose the shifts in population health and policy that have occurred since the 2016 federal election.

“I’m very excited to join the HPC Board at this critical moment in history,” said Dr. Alecia McGregor. “Shifts in the health care system now will determine how well we recover from COVID-19 and workforce shortages, and how boldly we address devastating inequities in access to care, affordability, and outcomes. It’s an honor to serve in this capacity.”

Dr. McGregor will serve as the AG’s appointee with demonstrated expertise in health care consumer advocacy. This appointment was previously held by Dr. Don Berwick, who resigned in June. Dr. McGregor will serve the remainder of this term, expiring in November 2024.

The HPC Board governs the activities of the HPC, which is an independent state agency that develops policy to reduce health care cost growth and improve the quality of patient care. Among other initiatives, the HPC is responsible for monitoring the performance of the health care system, analyzing the impact of health care market transactions on cost, quality and access, setting the health care cost growth benchmark, and investing in community care delivery.
