BOSTON — Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell issued the following statement in response to today’s ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court in Louisiana v. Callais, weakening Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Section 2 prohibits voting practices or procedures that discriminate on the basis of race.

"Today's decision by the Supreme Court is a direct assault on the hard-fought rights and freedoms earned by generations of people of color and a major step backward for fair representation in our democracy," said AG Campbell. "This decision will diminish the ability of communities of color to elect candidates of their choice at every level of government.  My office will continue to fight to protect the right to vote of every eligible Massachusetts resident and ensure that the promise of our Democracy remains accessible to all."

In December 2024, AG Campbell joined a coalition of 20 other attorneys general in filing an amicus brief in the U.S. Supreme Court in defense of Louisiana’s constitutional right to redraw legislative maps and enact a congressional map that includes the creation of a second majority Black district, after a 2022 federal court ruled that the existing map likely diluted the votes of Black residents and violated Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act.
