Boston — Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell issued the following statement in response to today’s ruling of the Supreme Court of the United States in Kennedy v. Braidwood Management, Inc.
“I applaud the Supreme Court for rejecting a challenge to the Affordable Care Act provisions that require medical insurers to cover key preventative services. Today’s decision will protect access to affordable, preventive health care services, like mammograms and colonoscopies, for millions of Americans. These procedures detect conditions early, reduce disparities in health outcomes, and save lives. The decision helps ensure that no one can be denied a cancer screening because their insurer doesn’t cover it,” said AG Campbell.
In February, AG Campbell joined a coalition of 23 attorneys general in filing an amicus brief urging the Supreme Court to protect a key provision of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) that guarantees access to critical preventive care for millions of Americans. In today’s decision, the Supreme Court upheld the structure of the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force against a constitutional challenge, reversing a previous ruling by the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit.
