Washington, DC — Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell testified today in front of the Joint Democratic Congressional Judiciary Committee to highlight the actions she and other Democratic attorneys general are taking to protect the American people from the Trump Administration’s harmful attacks on Massachusetts’s residents, economy, and the rule of law.

“Since the President took office in January, my colleagues and I have filed dozens of legal actions to defend our states against the Administration’s onslaught of unlawful actions,” said AG Campbell. “We’ve successfully blocked funding cuts to life-saving medical research and vital state services, and we will continue to fight, never losing sight of the everyday Americans bearing the brunt of the President’s harmful agenda.”

In her testimony, AG Campbell shared how Democratic attorneys general are using the unique authority of their offices to meaningfully fight back against Trump’s damaging agenda, including by defending billions of dollars in federal funding that states and communities rely on. This includes numerous lawsuits to restore funding from the National Institutes of Health for lifesaving medical and public health research, to block the Office of Management and Budget’s mandate to numerous agencies to freeze funding for critical state services like childcare, transportation, and public safety, and to protect Department of Education funding for K-12 teacher prep grants and so much more. In many of these cases, AG Campbell and her colleagues have successfully won court orders to halt the cuts and restore these critical funds while the lawsuits proceed through the courts.

AG Campbell also highlighted her efforts to affirm the rights of Massachusetts residents in the face of Executive Orders intended to stoke fear and division. The Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office has issued guidance on the right to implement DEI initiatives in the workplace, on the right to access life-saving gender affirming care, and on people’s rights in the face of broadscale ICE enforcement. These are rights that have not and cannot be eliminated by the stroke of a Sharpie, and that remain protected under federal and state law.

Finally, AG Campbell underscored that while the federal government is stepping back when it comes to protecting consumers, civil rights, and the environment, she and her colleagues are stepping up to fill the void by enhancing their work in those areas. AG Campbell concluded her testimony by pledging to continue using her platform to fight on behalf of Massachusetts, and Americans across the country.
