Boston — Attorney General Maura Healey today issued the following statement in response to a compromise from House and Senate negotiators in support of the transgender anti-discrimination bill.
“We have a very proud history in Massachusetts of protecting the civil rights and equality of all residents and visitors. Our fight for transgender rights should be no different. For transgender people and their families that want and deserve to feel safe from discrimination in public places, this simple law will mean the world. There has been such overwhelming support for these protections – from law enforcement, the business community, major sports teams and ordinary citizens alike who believe in equality and safety for all. I thank members of the Conference Committee and both House and Senate leadership for their work to get this important bill to the Governor’s desk so we can continue to ensure that in Massachusetts, everyone is welcome.”
BACKGROUND:
AG Healey has worked closely with advocates to garner support for this bill. In October, AG Healey testified in support of the legislation and submitted a letter advocating for its passage. In March, the AG’s Office launched the #EveryoneWelcome social media campaign, featuring short video messages from celebrity allies of the transgender community and families from across the state. Dozens of Massachusetts businesses also joined the AG’s Office in a letter urging the Legislature to take a favorable vote on legislation.
