BOSTON Attorney General Maura Healey today announced the appointment of a skilled policy advisor and assistant attorney general to a key leadership position in her office, naming Gabrielle Viator as the new Chief of Staff.

Viator, a Beverly resident, has spent much of the past decade at the AG’s Office, most recently as Deputy Chief and Senior Policy Advisor in the AG’s Policy and Government Division, where she advised AG Healey on legislative and policy matters and worked closely with bureaus and divisions to develop and advocate for legislation that furthered the priorities of the office. Before that she was an Assistant Attorney General in the AG’s Civil Rights Division, investigating and bringing enforcement actions relating to matters including housing discrimination, disability rights, predatory and discriminatory lending, public accommodations, and violations of the Massachusetts Civil Rights Act.

Viator has led special projects and initiatives at the AG’s Office such as the Student Debt Working Group, drafted guidance on the state’s pay equity law and transgender anti-discrimination protections, and coordinated efforts across the office related to the legalization of marijuana.

“Gabe has been a close advisor to me for many years, and will bring her strong policy experience, commitment to public service, and passion for teamwork to this important position,” AG Healey said. “I am excited to appoint her as Chief of Staff and look forward to her continued leadership of the office’s mission-driven work on behalf of the communities we serve.”

“The work we do in the Attorney General’s Office is so important and makes a difference in people’s lives every day,” Viator said. “Over the past 10 years, I have been proud to be a part this team. I am grateful for this opportunity to serve the people of Massachusetts in this new role.”

In her new position, Viator will work closely with the AG’s senior team to support the ongoing case-making, investigatory, and other work of the office’s bureaus and divisions. Viator will also assist in running the AG’s Executive Bureau and management of the office’s large and diverse public office.

In addition to her work at the AG’s Office, Viator worked as a litigation associate at Ropes & Gray from 2005-2009. She was also the legislative director for then-State Senator Thomas McGee from 2000-2005. Viator holds degrees from Boston College and Suffolk University Law School.
