BostonAttorney General Maura Healey today announced Amy Karangekis will take over as Regional Chief of the AG’s Western Massachusetts office in Springfield.

“Our office’s work is driven by the expertise of our attorneys and staff who help us fight on behalf of the people of Massachusetts every day,” AG Healey said. “Amy has been a champion of our office in Springfield for the past 10 years, and we are excited she will take the helm as our Regional Chief and lead our efforts throughout Western Massachusetts.”

Karangekis joined the AG’s Office in 2008 as an Assistant Attorney General for the Criminal Bureau and assumed the role of Deputy Regional Chief for the AG’s Western Massachusetts office in 2014. In addition to her role as Deputy Regional Chief, Karangekis was named Managing Attorney for the Springfield office in 2015, supervising all criminal cases for the office including human trafficking, public corruption, organized crime, narcotics trafficking and gaming enforcement.

Prior to joining the AG’s Office, Karangekis served as legal consultant for law firms in Massachusetts and Maine, assisting firms on cases filed in state and federal courts through litigation. She also worked as an adjunct professor of legal research, writing and oral advocacy at New England School of Law. Karangekis served as law clerk to Justice Judith A. Cowin of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, Justice J. Harold Flannery of the Massachusetts Appeals Court, and to the Massachusetts Superior Court justices. She is a graduate of New England School of Law and The Ohio State University.

The AG’s Western Massachusetts office handles cases throughout the region investigating and prosecuting crime, combating fraud and protecting consumers, workers and civil rights. Recent cases handled by the regional office include the indictment of two individuals for human and sex trafficking at Springfield “massage parlors,” and the investigation into an illegal loansharking and money laundering scheme in Western Massachusetts.

The Western Massachusetts office also works closely with local community organizations to provide outreach and education programs on important consumer and public safety issues for Western Massachusetts residents. In April, the AG’s Office held a free wage theft clinic in Springfield to connect workers with lawyers, law students, interpreters and other advocates to help them learn about their rights. Members of the Springfield office also regularly participate in the Western Massachusetts Refugee Community Consultation, a key mechanism for sharing information with stakeholders about new Americans arriving in the region, and in the Holyoke Safe Neighborhood Initiative.
