Boston — Delivering on her promise to bring the resources of the Attorney General’s Office directly to people in their communities, Attorney General Maura Healey Thursday kicked off her office’s Community Action Hours in Roxbury.
“We are here today because the Attorney General’s Office is a resource for you,” AG Healey said at the Roxbury Boys and Girls Club. “We are a resource to help you in many areas including if you are a victim of a consumer scam, protecting your civil rights and making sure you are receiving the benefits you deserve as a worker. These services are available for everyone, regardless of where you came from or what language you speak.”
The Community Action Hours is a new initiative under the office’s Community Engagement Division that builds on AG Healey’s promise to run an open and inclusive office and is designed to ensure that people across the state have access to the AG’s Office and the work it provides.
Staff from the office including assistant attorneys general, investigators and mediators conducted information sessions on worker’s rights including the new Earned Sick Time law and domestic worker’s law, conducted intakes and provided assistance on various issues.
AG Healey echoed some of the sentiments she shared with those gathered last weekend at the Charles Street AME Interfaith Service honoring the victims of the shooting in Charleston, SC. She asked those in attendance at the Roxbury Community Action Hours to accept a challenge she posed to them to come together and use the pain they feel from the Charleston shooting to move the country and the Commonwealth forward.
“What happened in Charleston has left me heartbroken, heartsick and angry,” AG Healey said. “But this horrible act of racial terrorism isn’t just about Charleston. It’s about America. It’s about all of us. And it’s up to all of us to change it. Tonight I’m challenging all of you here today to come together, recognize the pain we are feeling and address the disparities we see every day in housing, voting rights, employment, education and income.”
AG Healey has invited the public to share how they are going to work together to address the disparities that are still felt across the Commonwealth, on social media using the hashtag #IGotNext.
