Press Release  AG Healey Opens Grant Application Period for Sixth Annual Summer Jobs Program for Young People

Boston — Attorney General Maura Healey today opened the sixth annual application period for her office’s summer jobs program for young people across the state.

The Healthy Summer Youth Jobs Grant Program will use health-care related settlement money secured by the AG’s Office to provide funding to organizations to hire teens for jobs that are focused on public health and wellness.

“Our summer jobs program provides hundreds of young people with an opportunity to challenge themselves, develop new skills, and promote healthy living AG Healey said. “We look forward to seeing the difference our young people will make in their communities this summer.” 

Through this program, young people will have a direct impact in their communities by working in jobs that promote nutrition, physical fitness, and healthy lifestyles.

Examples of healthy summer youth jobs that could receive funding may include, but are not limited to:

• Coaching sports or physical fitness activities at a summer camp;
• Building and maintaining a community garden or urban farm;
• Leading classes on cooking, nutrition and healthy lifestyles;
• Creating a recycling awareness campaign for the community;
• Mentoring and educating youth about healthy relationships; and
• Activities that directly address access to health care and/or the management or prevention of chronic diseases among youth including diabetes, asthma, and obesity.

The AG’s Office will issue grants to municipalities, other government offices and nonprofits within the state. Since launching the grant program in 2015, the AG’s Office has funded more than 850 summer jobs for youth across the state. Last year, the office awarded nearly $322,000 in grant funding to 100 organizations across the state. The AG’s Community Engagement and Fair Labor Divisions also spent last summer training the employed young people on wage and hour laws and workers’ rights.

Grant awards will fund youth employment from July 6, 2020 and through Sept. 4, 2020. Interested applicants can visit the AG’s website for more information and for application instructions. Applications must be received by 5 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 21, 2020.
