BOSTON — The Massachusetts Board of Higher Education (BHE) is inviting students, educators, families and community members to inform the national search for the state’s next Commissioner of Higher Education. As part of the national search process, the BHE is seeking input on the qualifications, experience and priorities stakeholders value in the next commissioner through two virtual public forums on Tuesday, November 3 at 1 p.m. or 4 p.m., and is also seeking feedback through an online survey by November 4 at 5 p.m.

“Massachusetts has made historic investments to expand access to higher education, and we want to build on that progress by helping more students succeed,” said Education Secretary Steve Zrike. “Our next commissioner will play an important role in working with campuses to strengthen student success, expand opportunities, and ensure public higher education continues fostering a strong economy and vibrant communities statewide.”

“Massachusetts continues to open the doors of higher education to more students, and we look forward to a national search for a collaborative leader who can build on this progress and help shape the next chapter for higher education in the Commonwealth,” said Board of Higher Education Chair Chris Gabrieli. “We appreciate the advisory council members’ perspectives and commitment to informing a thoughtful search. Their input will help us identify a leader who can work with our campuses and partners to ensure that higher education continues evolving to meet the needs of students and the Commonwealth.”

In September, the BHE established the Commissioner Search Advisory Council (CSAC) to help identify, screen, and recommend finalists for the Board’s consideration. The council includes a diverse set of stakeholders representing different regions, perspectives, experiences and areas of expertise. The BHE has also selected Academic Search, a national higher education executive search firm, to support the process following a competitive Request for Proposals (RFP) process.

In addition to the public forums and survey, Academic Search will gather input from several stakeholder groups, including:

  • The Student Advisory Council
  • DHE Staff
  • Public College and University Administrators and Staff
  • Legislators
  • Public College and University Presidents
  • College and University Students
  • Public College and University Faculty
  • Public College and University Boards of Trustees
  • Independent College and University Presidents

After gathering public and stakeholder feedback, the advisory council will finalize a position profile outlining the desired qualifications, experience, and qualities sought in the next commissioner. The profile will guide the national search and selection process and will be shared broadly to help attract a diverse pool of qualified candidates.

The advisory council will screen and interview initial candidates before recommending three to five finalists for the BHE's consideration. The BHE will conduct public interviews before selecting a final candidate for appointment, subject to the approval of the Massachusetts Secretary of Education.
