Group Insurance Commission update - February 1 commission vote
We are writing to provide an update on the GIC health insurance offerings that will be in place starting on July 1, 2018.
On Thursday, February 1, the Group Insurance Commission (GIC) voted in favor of maintaining all current commercial insurance carriers on the GIC platform. This decision means that public employees will continue to have access to the six commercial carriers currently offered by the GIC when they select their plan during open enrollment: Fallon, Harvard Pilgrim, Health New England, Neighborhood Health Plan, Tufts, and UniCare.
Retirees with Medicare plans will be able to choose from four carriers: Harvard Pilgrim, Health New England, Tufts, and UniCare.
There will be two additional GIC meetings this month. On Tuesday, February 6, there will be a vote on plan design, and on Thursday, February 22 there will be a vote on plan benefit rates. The GIC will be updating all key stakeholders following tomorrow’s Commission vote.
The GIC will share plans and rates in advance of its Annual Enrollment period which begins on Wednesday, April 4 and ends Wednesday, May 2.
We also wanted to share testimony to the Legislature which GIC Executive Director Dr. Roberta Herman delivered earlier this week to share insight on the health care plan procurement. Dr. Herman’s testimony is available here.
