BOSTON A former slot machine technician at MGM Springfield has been indicted in connection with stealing approximately $22,000 from the casino, Attorney General Maura Healey announced today.

A Hampden County Grand Jury has indicted Salvador Montalvo Jr., 54, of West Springfield, on the charges of Larceny of Property over $1,200 and Making False Entries in Corporate Books (one count each). He will be arraigned on the charges in Hampden Superior Court at a later date.

The charges are the result of a joint investigation by AG Healey’s Gaming Enforcement Division and the Massachusetts State Police Gaming Enforcement Unit at MGM Springfield. The investigation began in January following an audit MGM Springfield conducted on its Slot Department.

Authorities allege that between August 2018 and January 2019, Montalvo withdrew $23,940 from the casino cashier to perform tests on various slot machines. He allegedly returned only approximately $2,000 to the casino and pocketed the remaining $22,000 — the majority of which he is believed to have deposited into his personal checking account. Additionally, Montalvo is alleged to have forged his supervisors’ signatures on the forms he needed to withdraw the funds from the casino cashier.

All of these charges are allegations and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant Attorneys General Colleen Monroe and Division Chief Thomas Caldwell, with assistance from Financial Investigator Gene Griffin, all of AG Healey’s Gaming Enforcement Division. The case was investigated by AG Healey’s Gaming Enforcement Division, the Massachusetts State Police Gaming Enforcement Unit at MGM Springfield, and MGM Springfield, with assistance from the Springfield Police Department, and the Massachusetts Gaming Commission. MGM Springfield fully cooperated with this investigation.
