June 20th marks the official start of summer. As motorcycles and off-road vehicles are more common modes of transportation in the summer, the Division of Insurance recommends that consumers evaluate their insurance needs for this period of fun and sun.

Just like with a regular car or truck, motorcycle operators in Massachusetts are required to carry compulsory insurance coverage for bodily injury and property damage liability at the required minimum limits. Unlike private passenger auto insurance, however, your insurance company is not legally obligated to provide personal injury protection (PIP) for the operators or passengers of a motorcycle who incur bodily injury while on the motorcycle.

Motorcycle operators may wish to consider purchasing Medical Payments Coverage (referred to as MedPay) which pays for reasonable expenses for necessary bodily injury medical expenses and funeral services for anyone on your motorcycle resulting from an accident. Motorcycle operators may also choose to purchase comprehensive and collision coverage. Financed motorcycles will likely require that you carry these physical damage coverages.

Your policy premium will depend on your driving record and years licensed, the motorcycle’s engine size, its age and how often you ride it.

Vehicles such as all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) are not covered by standard auto insurance policies, but a company may offer an endorsement to add this coverage. Although ATVs may also be partially covered by your homeowner’s policy, you should contact your insurance agent to see if you should consider purchasing a separate ATV policy. Keep in mind there may be age and coverage restrictions regarding who can operate an ATV.

Consumers with questions or concerns about their insurance coverages or insurance company are urged to visit the Division’s website at www.mass.gov/doi, or to contact the Division’s Consumer Services Unit at (617) 521-7794 or by email at CSSComplaints@mass.gov.

The primary mission of the Division of Insurance (DOI) is to monitor the solvency of its licensees in order to promote a healthy, responsive and willing marketplace for consumers who purchase insurance products. Protection of consumer interests is of prime importance to the Division and is safeguarded by providing accurate and unbiased information so consumers may make informed decisions and by intervening on behalf of consumers who believe they have been victimized by unfair business practices.
