News  Is Your Home Winter-Weather Ready?

Winter weather, including heavy snow, burst pipes, and ice dams, can result in costly homeowners’ insurance claims. The Massachusetts Division of Insurance recommends that homeowners take steps now to protect their property in advance of freezing temperatures.

To be winter-weather ready, consider taking these preventative measures:

  • Insulate and maintain water pipes. Most homeowner’s insurance pays for “sudden and accidental” water damage resulting from a pipe burst, but only if you have kept your home properly heated and did not leave it unoccupied. You will also want to shut off and cover exterior faucets used for garden hoses.
  • Inspect and maintain your gutters and roof. Clearing the debris from your gutters will help prevent ice dams by allowing meltwater to drain freely. Ice dams may be covered as long as the damage was sudden and did not result from a lack of maintenance.
  • Heavy, wet snow can cause tree limbs to break and can also cause unseen structural damage and even make your roof collapse. Monitor tree health and trim them as needed. A snow-rake can help remove some of the snow build-up on your roof (Always use caution when clearing snow from your roof!)
  • Contact your insurance company or agent to make sure you have the right types and amounts of coverage, as well as familiarize yourself with applicable exclusions and deductibles. If you do suffer a loss and cannot live in the home while repairs are being done, be sure you have additional living expenses coverage to help cover the extra costs of lodging, meals, and even pet boarding while you are unable to live in the home.
  • If you rent a home or apartment, keep in mind that your landlord’s insurance does not cover your personal property. Renter’s insurance is a relatively inexpensive way to ensure your belongings are covered in the event of a loss.

Consumers with questions or concerns about their insurance coverage are encouraged to contact the Division’s Consumer Services Unit at 617-521-7794 or visit the Division’s website at https://www.mass.gov/home-insurance
