Disasters and emergency situations can occur at any moment. Our furry friends tend to be forgotten when making emergency plans. According to the American Red Cross, home fires are the most preventable disasters. There are a few simple, but effective ways to make sure your pets are safe when a disaster strikes. Today, National Pet Fire Safety Day, is the perfect opportunity to prepare!

Keep your pet safe from fires using these tips from the Pet Health Network:

1. Make sure your smoke detectors are on and have fresh batteries installed.
2. Don’t leave the house without securing stove knobs or extinguishing candles. If you use candles, make sure you are close by in case your pet plays near them.
3. Pack a ‘to go’ bag for your pet. Include leashes, dog food, collars, tags, medications, and any other necessary items.
4. If your pet doesn’t normally wear an identification tag (which they should at all times) make sure to put them on before you leave the house or store them in your pet’s ‘to go’ bag.
5. Ensure that everyone in your household knows the evacuation plan in order to your pet in your absence. Don’t forget to include your youngest children too!
6. Post stickers on your door and windows to alert first responders that pets may be in the household. These stickers tell how many and what kind of animals live in your home.
