Press Release  MassDEP Fines American Environmental for Asbestos Violations in Springfield

BOSTON — The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) has fined American Environmental, Inc. of Holyoke, $19,140 for asbestos violations that occurred during asbestos abatement activities at the former Eastfield Mall in Springfield. MassDEP discovered the violations during inspections of the property.

American Environmental, Inc. failed to ensure that appropriate asbestos work practices and controls were implemented during its asbestos abatement activities at the former Eastfield Mall. MassDEP’s September 2023 inspection of the property revealed that a waste storage container was leaking water to the outside, originating from improperly containerized asbestos waste contained therein. A subsequent inspection revealed that the company had improperly stockpiled asbestos cement pipes and left them exposed to the outside air.

"These violations are a clear reminder of the critical importance of following asbestos regulations to protect public health and the environment. The improper handling, storage, and disposal of asbestos-containing materials pose significant risks to workers, the public and the surrounding community," said Michael Gorski, Director of MassDEP’s Western Regional Office in Springfield. "MassDEP is taking appropriate enforcement actions to address these breaches and ensure compliance."
