BOSTON — The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) has assessed a $28,040 penalty to Leaktite Corporation for violating air pollution and hazardous waste regulations at its industrial facility located at 40 Francis Street in Leominster.
Leaktite makes custom plastic buckets through an injection molding process. MassDEP determined that the company failed to keep records of its air emissions and also violated multiple hazardous waste regulations, including shipping hazardous waste to an unlicensed facility using an unlicensed transporter.
"Manufacturers must comply with air quality and hazardous waste regulations to protect public health and the environment," said Mary Jude Pigsley, director of MassDEP's central regional office in Worcester. "Improper handling of hazardous waste endangers workers, first-responders and the public, while air pollution poses serious risks to our most vulnerable residents. We enforce strict standards to ensure that hazardous waste and harmful pollutants are managed and controlled safely and responsibly."
Leaktite has committed to complying with the state's air pollution and hazardous waste requirements. As part of the settlement agreement with MassDEP, the company agreed to pay the $28,040 penalty and take necessary actions to correct the violations, including contracting a licensed hazardous waste transporter to an approved facility. Leaktite must also report to MassDEP all the actions it has taken to comply with its air permit requirements under state regulations.
