BOSTON — The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) has issued a $17,400 fine to Rowley-based NorthStar Demolition and Remediation, Inc., doing business as Northeast Remediation, for asbestos violations that occurred during abatement services at the Northfield Mountain energy storage facility located at 99 Millers Falls Road in Northfield.

MassDEP discovered the violations during inspections of the facility in November 2025. The inspections determined that Northeast Remediation failed to utilize asbestos work practices and controls during its asbestos abatement activities at the energy storage facility. Specifically, personnel failed to properly wet asbestos insulation prior to removal and adequately containerize and seal the insulation, resulting in a risk of exposure.

“Compliance with the asbestos regulations minimizes risk and helps to ensure the safety of both workers and the public,” said Michael Gorski, director of MassDEP’s Western Regional Office in Springfield. “Northeast Remediation is being held accountable for failing to comply with the most basic work practices.”

Under the terms of MassDEP’s order, Northeast Remediation must pay the $17,400 fine. The company has since resolved the identified violations.

Property owners or contractors with questions about asbestos-containing materials, notification requirements, proper removal, handling, packaging, storage, and disposal procedures, or MassDEP asbestos regulations are encouraged to contact the appropriate MassDEP Regional Office for assistance.
