(Boston, MA) – The Massachusetts Department of Revenue (DOR) today reminded the Commonwealth’s taxpayers that the deadline this year for filing their state and federal individual income tax returns is Tuesday, April 19. The four-day extension is due to the celebration of two holidays, Emancipation Day in Washington, D.C., observed on April 15, and Patriots’ Day on April 18, in the Bay State.

With the end of the tax season less than a week away, DOR encourages taxpayers to visit www.mass.gov/dor for e-filing, helpful tips, and resources to make filing taxes as hassle-free as possible.

“The clock is ticking on this filing season and some taxpayers may be feeling stressed, but help is only a click away,” said Kevin Brown, DOR’s Acting Commissioner. “From our website you can file your state taxes, check the status of your refund, and find the information you need to finish and file your taxes on time by April 19.”

E-File Today
With time running out, the best way to file your taxes is to e-file, which is also the quickest way to receive your refund, when you select direct deposit. So far, about 93 percent of this year’s returns have been e-filed.

There are several e-filing options, including DOR’s secure, easy-to-use, and free Webfile for Income, and some commercial software companies offer free tax-filing programs for both state and federal taxes to those who qualify. The average turnaround time for an e-filed refund is two weeks. Paper filers can expect to wait up to six weeks on average to receive their refund.

Once your taxes have been filed, use DOR’s refund status app 24/7 to find out when you can expect to receive your refund.

Tax Amnesty – Ends May 31
The Tax Amnesty program is an opportunity for individuals and businesses to catch up on back taxes and save on penalties. The goal of the tax amnesty program is to bring into compliance those taxpayers who have failed to file prior-year returns or have underreported their taxes. The deadline to file the simple online return is May 31; to learn more and to file, visit www.mass.gov/taxamnesty.
