The Massachusetts Commission on LGBTQ Youth is outraged and heartbroken by the brutal attack on a transgender teenager in Gloucester. While our transgender and gender expansive family from across the country seek asylum and refuge in Massachusetts, this act of violence has become a painful example of the ongoing discrimination and hate faced by transgender and gender-diverse youth - even here.
We stand in solidarity with the young person, their family, and the entire Gloucester community as they navigate this traumatic experience. No child should ever fear for their safety because of who they are - particularly in spaces where they should feel safe and supported. We reaffirm our commitment to ensuring that schools and communities across Massachusetts become safe and affirming spaces for LGBTQ youth. We have so much work to do.
We call on local law enforcement and school officials to fully investigate this horrific act and ensure that appropriate measures are taken to support the victim and prevent further violence. At the same time, we urge schools, districts, and communities across the Commonwealth to redouble efforts to foster inclusion, respect, and understanding of transgender and gender-diverse individuals. We also recognize the need for systemic changes, from policy to practice, that affirm and protect transgender youth.
This attack underscores the ongoing need for education, support, and advocacy, and the Massachusetts Commission on LGBTQ Youth remains steadfast in our work to promote safe and inclusive environments for all young people in our state.
In solidarity,
The Massachusetts Commission on LGBTQ Youth
