Press Release  Treasurer Goldberg And The MSBA Celebrate Ribbon Cutting On Springfield Central High School Science Labs

SPRINGFIELD, MA — State Treasurer Deborah B. Goldberg, Chair of the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) and Jack McCarthy, MSBA Executive Director, joined state and local officials at a ribbon cutting ceremony today for the new science wing at Springfield Central High School, where the MSBA is contributing more than $22 million in eligible expenses toward the project.

“Providing our students with a top-notch, 21st century science labs is critical to closing the skills gap and fostering a climate for long-term sustainable economic growth,” said Treasurer Deborah Goldberg. “Today’s ribbon cutting marks a major win for the children of Springfield and the Massachusetts economy.”

The 30,350 square-foot project consists of 12 new science labs, six new prep rooms, repurposing renovations to six classrooms, replacement of a greenhouse structure and improvements to building systems. Springfield Central High School serves 1,800 students in grades 9 through 12 and opened 1986.

“As a result of the successful collaboration between the MSBA and the District, Central High School students will get a completely up-to-date learning environment,” said MSBA Executive Director Jack McCarthy.

The MSBA partners with Massachusetts communities to support the design and construction of educationally appropriate, flexible, sustainable and cost-effective public school facilities. Since its 2004 inception, the Authority has made more than 1,500 site visits to more than 250 school districts as part of its due diligence process and has made more than $11.2 billion in reimbursements for school construction projects.
