Boston — State Treasurer Deb Goldberg and Wentworth President Dr. Zorica Pantić hosted a Women in STEM Summit at Wentworth Institute of Technology’s campus. The event brought together professionals, policymakers, and advocates to help develop best practices for advancing women and girls in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields.

“The Innovation Economy is a key driver for development throughout Massachusetts” said Treasurer Deb Goldberg. “This Women in STEM Summit will help provide strategies to empower women on a path of economic security.”

The Treasurer was joined by several government and industry leaders who are championing the effort to break down barriers and build a pipeline for women to participate in Massachusetts innovation economy.

“This gathering represents an important step forward in addressing the issue of bringing more women into the STEM arena—from creating a pipeline, to supporting STEM female students, to bringing them into the workforce,” said Pantić. “Establishing a working partnership among academia, state government and business is critically important to our success.”

“Inspiring women and girls to pursue careers in STEM fields not only increases their opportunity to excel, it strengthens our entire economy,” said Congressman Joe Kennedy III. “By bringing together stakeholders from our public and private sectors at this summit, we can work together to improve access to STEM education for all of our students. I applaud Treasurer Goldberg and Dr. Pantić for their leadership on this issue and thank them for allowing me to join the conversation today.”

The summit culminated with attendees participating in strategy discussion on fostering women in the industry. Recommendations gathered at the event will help inform future STEM programming offered through the Massachusetts State Treasury's Office of Economic Empowerment.

On day one, Treasurer Goldberg created the Office of Economic Empowerment (OEE), led by a deputy treasurer with the deliberate goal of incorporating a range of economic empowerment initiatives, including financial literacy, college affordability and programming to support wage equality.
